Erta Ale & Danakil Depression

Over view. Erta Ale is a remote and rarely visited volcano that is known currently to have an active lava lake in its summit crater. Known by the Afar as the “smoking mountain” and “the gateway to hell,” Erta Ale is a 2,011-foot-high constantly active basaltic shield volcano.

Dallol is located in the Danakil Depression in Northeast Ethiopia. It is dubbed to be the most colorful place on Earth and the hottest place in the world. The Danakil is amazing for some of the most unique landforms and physically features seen on earth. Dallol, at 120 mbsl, has an old volcano which simmers beauty the surface.

Day 1 | Addis – Mekele – Danakil Depression

• Fly to Semera and drive to Ahmedela
• Admire the longest camel caravans bar salt across the desert landscape with beautiful sunset
• Admire the beautiful sunset over Denakil Depression

Day 2 | Denakil Depression – Ertale

• Early in the morning, visit one the surreal beauty of Dallol, where lakes of acid form colorful sulfur formation, one of the most colorful and unique places on Earth.
• Marvel at the vibrant geysers, steaming sulfuric pools, and visit the different landscape formed by volcanic activity
• Walk on Lake Asale which is a massive salt flat that stretches for miles
• Look the activity of breaking the salt from the ground, cutting in to rectangular pieces and loading on camel
• At night witness the awe-inspiring Ertale Volcano, home to the world’s oldest permanent Lake.

Day 3 | Ertale – Mekele

• Admire the beautiful Erta Ale lava lake erupting 24 hours a day
• Visit Lake Afdera, one of the lowes-ling lakes on the planet, where salt is harvested a traditional manner
• Over Night Mekele

Day 4| Mekele – Addis – End of the tour

• After breakfast fly back to Addis Ababa. The rest of the day is shopping and leisure. In the evening you will have cultural dinner then transfer to the airport for your departure. End of the tour.
